School of Companion Animal Science

Companion Animal Behavior Counseling Programs

The Companion Animal Behavior Counselor career curriculum is intended for the serious student of applied animal behavior who desires to be at the top of his or her professional field. It is designed to provide a broad theoretical and practical foundation for individuals who wish to train companion animals, instruct humane obedience classes for dog owners (canine behavior track), access, diagnose and treat abnormal behavior problems, and counsel the animal's family members. Our graduates own professional animal behavior practices or animal training schools; or they work at veterinary practices, animal shelters, pet supply stores, guide dog foundations, service dog organizations, or in private security or public law enforcement.

Courses are taught by an academic faculty of university instructors or clinical practitioners holding PhDs, Masters or veterinary degrees. The Institite is an Approved Provider with the International Association of Continuing Education and Training. Continuing Education Units (CEUs) are awarded upon successful completion of all courses. Students will select the appropriate species track for a career working with family dogs, cats, birds, horses or exotic animal species. The Institute is an Approved Education Provider (AEP) with the Association of Companion Animal Behavior Counselors, allowing students who have successfully completed the required coursework to be eligible to apply for an offered professional credential with the Board of Professional Certification of this international professional membership organization.

Foundation courses include animal learning processes and behavior analysis, ethology, family counseling, behavioral assessment, diagnosis and treatment, nutrition and wellness, and business practices and ethics or issues in companion animal welfare. Theoretical courses are taught online in virtual classrooms. Ground-based workshops with animals are offered at regional locations by ACABC certified animal behavior professionals at Institute-approved animal training facilities, veterinary hospitals or animal shelters .
Only the specialization in canine behavior is currently open for enrollment. The feline behavior specialization is scheduled to begin enrollment in Winter 2002. The equine, avian and exotic behavior specializations are under development and are scheduled to begin enrollment in the 2003-2004 school year.
