Topics will include sexual differentiation and normal anatomy, breeding management, semenology and artificial insemination including the use of chilled and frozen semen, copulation, pregnancy and parturition, neonatal care and infertility. The role of nutrition, genetics, endocrinology, behavior and early socialization will also be explored. Management of normal reproduction and reproductive disorders in the male and female dog and cat will be covered. Companion animal handling and care will be addressed including basic anatomy and physiology, nutrition, health and wellness, diseases, infections, vaccinations and schedules, daily care, grooming, and hygiene. Ethical breeding practices and animal overpopulation will also be addressed.
Students completing this program will become more knowledgeable breeders of cats and dogs, having been provided with the opportunity to investigate ways in which they can practice more scientific methodologies. Te program’s goal is, therefore, to affect the raising of these companion animals so that they are of good genetic quality, in good health and possess desirable temperament. This should increase the probability of them being kept as part of their human families and cared for, for life.
